SAW THIS, MADE THIS
Chelsea Factory, New York
10th to 14th May 2023
The world’s largest participatory AI artwork
Curated by film director Baz Luhrmann in partnership with Bombay Sapphire, the Design Museum and Chelsea Factory, the installation formed part of a global campaign celebrating creativity by inviting people to share images of what they had "seen" and subsequently "made" through the hashtag #SawThisMadeThis. Thousands of submissions from across six continents contributed to the project.
Throughout the installation, Ai-Da created new artworks live each day by interpreting and synthesising selected public submissions using her artistic AI systems. Visitors were able to observe her painting in real time, exploring how artificial intelligence might expand and enable human creativity through collaboration rather than replacement. On 10th May 2023, Ai-Da also took part in a public conversation with Baz Luhrmann and Tim Marlow, Director of the Design Museum, discussing creativity, artificial intelligence and the evolving relationship between artists and emerging technologies.
Following its debut at the Design Museum in London, the New York installation extended Saw This, Made This to an international audience. By combining thousands of public creative responses with Ai-Da's artistic process, the project explored new forms of collaboration between human imagination and artificial intelligence, demonstrating how AI can contribute to, rather than simply automate, creative practice.
