The world’s first collection of objects designed by a humanoid robot

Developed during Ai-Da's residency at Porthmeor Studios in St Ives, the exhibition featured designs for everyday objects including mugs, vases, plates and cutlery, later realised through 3D printing. Drawing inspiration from the Bauhaus, the Omega Workshop, the Leach Pottery and other modernist design movements that emerged during periods of social change, the works combined familiar forms with deliberate flaws that rendered them unusable. This unexpected failure of utility made an oblique comment on the unexpected discovery that advanced AI models, including GPT-3.5 and GPT-4, are able to assume and anticipate human thoughts and subjective experiences. This quality of higher intelligence was not explicitly programmed but nevertheless emerged through the development of the models, as discussed by Michal Kosinski in 2023. 

By presenting objects that appeared functional but ultimately failed in their intended purpose, AI Mind Home encouraged visitors to question how society designs its technological future and to consider the unintended consequences of increasingly capable AI systems.

AI Mind Home reflected on the growing integration of artificial intelligence into everyday life, suggesting that domestic objects may increasingly exist at the intersection of physical and digital environments. Through design, the exhibition examined questions of creativity, authorship, utility and human agency at a time of rapid technological change.
